Articles & Conferences
Author of a long analysis on Stockhausen's "Gruppen" (Masters Degree, 1998) and a vast dissertation on "Momente" and the form problematic in serial music (PhD thesis, 2003), Pedro Amaral develops a regular activity writing articles, acting as conferencist and giving lectures. He is presently Professor at the University of Évora, where he teaches Composition, Orchestration and Contemporary Aesthetics. Here you can find some dates, subjects and even some articles in pdf format.
Broadcastings
Since 1989, Pedro Amaral produced, at Antena 2 (Portuguese cultural radio), several hundreds of broadcastings on aesthetic, musicology, musical analysis and other domains. His broadcast series include, among many others, "Musical Forms on the XX century" (from 1989), "Sounds and structures" (on Mozart, 1991), "The origin of the musical work" (from 1993), "Musical Poetics" (2004) "Boulez/Berio: 1925/2005" (2005), "Dualities" (2006), "The Diaphanous Veil" (2008). Fernando Pessoa said he wanted to be a “creator of myths”, but maybe he was a re-creator of Portuguese heroes and universal myths like Faust and Salomé, which have inspired so many creators. Stepping back somewhat from the world he created, in a wider sense he was clearly a constant creator of fictions. The characters he created throughout his life constitute a huge fiction which might be termed not just a “drama in people” but rather a drama-novel. Only fiction escapes death, but to free himself of its grip Pessoa sometimes played opposite his fictions, and in so doing created a fiction of himself.
